Today was all about creating structures, focusing on different methods and materials for joining components together. There was no real direction in creating these structures. I just began joining pieces together in different ways using different fixings. I managed to use a wide range of methods of joining: tape, string, Velcro, hot glue, and cable ties. It was good to experiment with such a range. I feel like it has changed the way I might think about construction in the future. Surprisingly, the way something is fixed can actually embellish and change the whole look of a structure. Cable ties, for example, have an interesting form of their own, and when used to join two pieces together also add loops and spikes to the structure, altering its texture and whole look. I enjoyed using different coloured tapes not only to fix but also to add colour and interest to pieces of wood, polypropylene and foam board. Although I experimented with a lot of different fastenings and joining methods, the structures I had at the end were fewer and less aesthetically pleasing than I would have liked. I would have preferred to come out with a wider range of larger, nicer to look at structures. It would have been good to experiment with even more methods of fixing too.
